About Us

Our Birth Story

Before Parents@Work there was mums@work.

mums@work launched in 2006 as Australia's first provider of return to work career guidance specifically supporting mothers to re-enter the workforce.

The community based social enterprise was the brainchild of Emma Walsh – Managing Director of HR Consulting Firm, Changing Places HR Services.

After the birth of her twin boys Emma identified a lack of support for working mums when it came to planning their parental leave and making the adjustments necessary to achieve the right work-life balance. Responding to community needs, mums@work grew to offer a career guidance service, seminars and information resources as well as free online Return to Work checklists, tutorials and job alerts.

But even as early as 2006, Emma also recognised the opportunity for businesses themselves to play an integral part in achieving greater gender diversity by actively supporting working parents. While mums@work became the leading voice for working mums (and increasing numbers of dads too), Emma and the Parents@Work team were also working to support employers and their managers to improve work-life outcomes for parents (both men and women). The seeds for Parents@Work were being sown.

The value of these services became increasingly evident to other organisations around Australia and in 2013 Parents@Work branched off as its own entity and now has a proven track record of successfully developing and implementing working parent programs.

Parents@Work not only supports working parents going on leave, returning to work and managing their career long-term, but also ensures employers retain talented employees and provide career opportunities where both the organisation and individuals continue to grow.
